What was the inequality between people in the countries of the ancient east?

Inequality was divided into classes. The rulers and their inner circle belonged to the upper class. Next came the merchants, traders, workers and peasants. The lower class included the poor. The upper class had more privileges: they had more rights and they had the right not to pay taxes. The lower class, on the contrary, served the upper class. Also, the upper class had the right to land.
