What was the main reason for the separation of churches? (medieval period)

The separation of the churches took place in 1054. The reason for this process was many conflicts between the highest church leaders. They could not come to a decision about who would be the supreme ruler of the organization. In the west, a candidate for the Pope was put forward, and in the east for the patriarch of Constantinople. They were at enmity and were soon forced to divide Christianity into two branches: Orthodox and Catholic. In the Western Roman Empire, the Pope stood at the head of the church, and in the east, the Byzantine patriarch.
