What was the position of a woman in Sparta?

The Spartan device was characterized by a despotic form of government. The population in this state was mainly engaged in military craft. From an early age they were brought up in military conditions, which contributed to the creation of an efficient army and the support of the state. Women in this state could also participate in military campaigns. Some were home educated and engaged in housekeeping. Women in Sparta were not infringed upon, but were considered full participants in the activities characteristic of all citizens.
