The situation of slaves at all times was the hardest. They were involved in the dirtiest and most dangerous work, poorly fed and tortured. The punishments for the slaves were very severe. The master disposed of the life of each of his slaves, he could easily kill without any consequences. The slave was equated with a talking brute. Slightly better was the position of slaves who could teach or help the master in trade or economic activities. Such slaves were appreciated, their life was somewhat easier than that of the rest. Slaves could get lucky and they ended up in the house of a good master and could even, over time, be redeemed for freedom.
