The most important gods were: Anu – the supreme deity, patron of royal power; Enlil is also the supreme god, the patron saint of a separate community in the state; Enki – the god of fertility and wisdom, was the patron saint of magical arts; Ishtar – the goddess of fertility and beauty, was the patroness of procreation.
