What were the main population groups of the medieval city?
The medieval city is a free space where the people, mostly fugitive peasants, could live without feudal oppression. The cities were the center of crafts and trade and therefore the majority of the population was working people, however, in the city law of Strasbourg dating back to the 12th century, it is said that in addition to free citizens, the population of the city included: ministers of the church, servants of the bishop, servants of the Strasbourg chapter and monasteries , servants of the whole bishopric. Do not forget about the local lords, who concentrated both judicial and administrative power in their hands, but did not have the same power over the inhabitants as in the village. In some large cities, especially in the centers of transit trade, a stratum of professional merchants appeared.
