In ancient times, on the Mediterranean coast, near Turkey, there was a Phoenician civilization (1500-700 BC). The Phoenicians became famous for their inventions especially in the fields of shipbuilding and trade. The largest cities of Phenicia were: Akko, Akziv, Tzaraat, Beruta, Byblos (modern Gebal) and Arwad, Tire, Sidon.
