The war between the Delian Union and the Peloponnesian Union led by Sparta began in 431 BC.  and lasted until 404. The main reason for the war between these two Greek allied entities was a disagreement over the forms of government in Hellas, as well as control over trade routes in the western Mediterranean. For military action against Sparta were rural communities and aristocratic landowners, who suffered most from the invasions of enemies, and a simple demos, who received support from the Athenian polis during the war, participating in campaigns, spoke in favor.
