What would happen on earth if the sun stopped illuminating the earth?

The sun supplies energy to producers who use it to synthesize organic matter. If there was no sun, organic substances would cease to be synthesized, and living organisms would begin to die out. Plants would also cease to emit oxygen during photosynthesis, because of which metabolism would cease to occur, and all living things would perish.
