What’s the difference between a large scale map and a small scale map? Give examples from the atlas.

A large-scale map is considered to be any terrain plan or map, the scale of which does not exceed 1: 100000.

On these maps, no more than 1 kilometer of terrain can be shown in 1 centimeter of the image.

Small-scale maps are considered to be all maps, the scale of which exceeds 1: 1,000,000.

On these maps, more than 10 km of real terrain is displayed in 1 cm of the map.

So on a map in scale of 1: 50,000, a distance of 10 kilometers will take a segment length:

10 / (50,000 / 100,000) = 20 cm.

On a map with a scale of 1: 5,000,000, this segment will be equal to:

10 / (5,000,000 / 100,000) = 0.2 cm.
