When and where did sentimentalism and romanticism begin?

Classicism in literature, as an artistic style, was formed in France in the 17th century and was based on the exemplary ideal of the “golden age” of ancient art. In Russia, Russian classicism reflected in literature the human personality as an element of being.

To replace classicism in Russia in the 18th-19th centuries, the genre of sentimentalism arose, the reading of which was the idealization of images and characters, which was distinguished by hypersensitivity of experiences. From classicism, the direction differed in feelings, therefore, we owe to sentimentalism the birth of democracy.

But to replace the existing styles, romanticism was in a hurry, whose homeland was the European and American culture of the 19th century. As the antagonist of classicism and sentimentalism, romanticism asserted the values of strong personalities and feelings. The direction is characterized by optimism and high purpose of the person.
