When and why did the Eastern Slavs have a state?

The Slavic state arose in 862. Its first rulers were Rurik, Askold and Dir.

There are two theories of the origin of the ancient Slavic state:

1. Norman theory, which says that the statehood of Russia began with the arrival of the Varangian Slavs to the lands, chief among whom was Rurik. Thus, two large centers of the state were formed in Kiev and Novgorod.

2. Anti-Norman theory, claims that Kievan Rus arose in connection with the socio-political processes that took place within the Slavic tribes. And the foundation of the state was natural for their level of development.
