When and why did the separation of the churches take place?

The split of the Christian Church into two major branches – Roman Catholic and Orthodox – was finally formed in 1054. Disagreements between the Pope in the West and the Patriarch of Constantinople in the East led to the fact that in the middle of the eleventh century, these heads of churches anathematized each other, that is, excommunicated. This happened due to the colossal difference in rituals and teachings: for example, they argued about whether the Holy Spirit emanated from the Father and the Son or only from the Father, and about whether yeast or unleavened bread should be used in the sacraments.
