When and why did the split of the Christian Church take place into Catholic and Orthodox?

The real reason for the split in the church was ordinary greed and lust for power. There were several splits. The first split took place in the 9th century and did not last long. The final split was pushed by a long political struggle between the two confessions. It happened in 1054. The reason was that by order of the Orthodox Patriarch, Latin churches were closed in Constantinople. At the same time, the Holy Gifts were thrown away. After that, the pope sent a message to the patriarch, in which there were claims to the full power of the Church in general. This was rejected. The papal legates left a message about the anathema to the patriarch. The Patriarch anathematized the legates.
