In 626 BC. one of the Assyrian governors Nabopolassar decided to secede from Assyria and build his own state. By 615 BC. he managed to capture most of the Babylonian lands. Also, Nabopalasar, together with the Medes, united and finally defeated the Assyrian Empire. The New Babylonian state reached its greatest prosperity during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II (604-561 BC). He was able to significantly expand the territory of the state by annexing the lands: Syria, Palestine, Phenicia and Judea.
