When do ion exchange reactions make sense?

Ion exchange reactions are meaningful only if one of the reaction products leaves the reaction medium. As a rule, these are three possible options: water is formed, the reaction product precipitates (i.e., is insoluble in the given medium), or leaves the reaction as a volatile compound.
