When is whole blood used for blood transfusion, and when is plasma?
To date, whole blood is only transfused in TV series: it is prohibited all over the world. This happened due to the good development of donation and the danger of whole blood. Each cell of our body contains a lot of antigens. And, in addition to the classic blood groups and the Rh factor, there are a dozen other antigens. The discrepancy between them in the donor and the recipient leads to a severe, deadly reaction. Therefore, today blood products are transfused: plasma and erythrocyte mass. With low hemoglobin, for example, after heavy bleeding, red blood cells are transfused. And if a person has lost not blood, but liquid – for example, in case of severe burns, intoxication, plasma is transfused. It can also be transfused with little blood loss, when the hemoglobin level has dropped slightly.
