When was slavery abolished in ancient Rome?

In antiquity, the final stage in the history of slavery was the transition to serfdom in the 2nd-3rd centuries, which happened during the reign of the emperor Diocletian in about 284-305.
The owners of the manor gave the slaves plots of land. Slaves, in turn, lived far from their masters, while gaining some independence. By the decree of the emperor, on pain of death, the peasants and landowners were forbidden to leave the places of their settlement. A rule was also introduced according to which people, including those who have complete freedom, after a certain number of years of living in a certain territory, had no right to leave it.
