Where are the vocal cords located in mammals?

Mammals have vocal cords. They are located in the pharynx. This is the part of the throat that is needed to block the airway during swallowing. In a normal state, the esophagus is closed. The vocal cords can change and because of this, the pitch and timbre of the voice changes. This is primarily due to the action of sex hormones. Therefore, the voice of men and women is different. In children, this difference is small, although it is still there. The voice “breaks” in boys from about 14 years of age during puberty.
