Where did horsetails come from?

Horsetails are a group of relatively primitive vascular plants. Horsetails have an ancient evolutionary line dating back to the Devonian period. These plants were the most numerous and varied in species about 300 million years ago, during the late Devonian and early Carboniferous periods. Fossils from that time suggest that some of these plants were 8 inches (20 cm) in size and at least 49 feet (15 m) high. However, today this group is represented by 29 species of small herbaceous plants.
