Where did the southern direction of the Great Silk Road go?

The southern direction of the Great Silk Road led from Samarkand (Central Asia) to the southwest, to the territory of modern Iraq, to cities such as Basra. From Basra, merchants could reach Oman by sea, and from overland – through Damascus and the cities of the Levant (east of the Mediterranean Sea) to Alexandria to Egypt. Arabs mainly traded along it, but Persians and Armenians lived nearby.
