Where does the name of the Gothic style in architecture come from?

The term comes from the word gotico, which is usually translated as “barbaric”.
Renaissance artists were guided by antique designs, and often adhered to a very harsh assessment of the art of the Middle Ages. The dominant style in the late Middle Ages, which contemporaries called “French”, seemed grotesque and disharmonious to the new masters.
