The organ of hearing in birds is much simpler than in mammals: with the exception of owls, they have no external ear, the auditory canal is shorter, and instead of a complex cochlea, there is only a slightly curved tube. There are paired auditory openings (grooves) leading to the external auditory canals, behind the eyes and ending in the tympanic membrane.
