To date, the CIS has only nine full members, and Russia has a direct border with only three of these countries. In the Central Asian region, Kazakhstan lies between the RF and the rest of the Commonwealth. Thus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan do not have borders with Russia. To the east of the Russian Federation lies Moldova, another member of the Commonwealth, which is separated from Russia by the territory of Ukraine. Another member of the CIS, Armenia, is located in Transcaucasia, between which Georgia and Azerbaijan are located and Russia.
