The territory overlooked the waters of the Aegean Sea, but many lands of upper Macedonia are located in the foothills of the Pindus. From the south, this country bordered on the city-states of Greek Thessaly. In the west, beyond the ridges of the Pindus mountains, the lands inhabited by Epiroth began. The northwest and northern lands relative to Macedonia belonged to the numerous Illyrian states. The Thracian lands began to the east.
