In the Middle Ages, Byzantium or the Eastern Roman Empire was located on the territory of modern Turkey and the Balkans, and during its heyday, that is, in the middle of the 6th century, it also covered the territory of North Africa, Italy and the western part of Georgia.

Iran or the Sassanid empire was located on the territory of modern Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, partly the Arabian Peninsula, the south of the Central Asian republics of the ex-USSR, Transcaucasia and the Middle East.

Both states had an advantageous geographical position on the trade routes that connected Europe and Asia (China, India).

The Byzantines considered themselves the heirs of Rome, therefore they called themselves “Romans”.

In Byzantium, the religion was Christianity, since 1054 Orthodoxy, and in Iran – Zoroastrianism, and also Manichaeism and Mithraism, and since the 7th century – Islam, after the absorption of the empire by the Caliphate.

For 1000 years of its history Byzantium fought with Sassanian Iran, Arabs, Slavs, Crusaders, Seljuk Turks and Ottoman Turks
