Which of the apostles became the first bishop of the Christian community in Rome?

The apostle Peter is considered the first Pope of Rome – though then he could be more likely to be called the bishop of Rome. Hebrew speakers call him Simon. Peter was one of Jesus’ most ardent and devoted followers. It was he who received from Jesus the message about the founding of the Christian church (in fact, Peter is translated from Greek as a stone). He was distinguished by his irascibility and hostility to dissent. At the same time, Peter informally disowned his teacher. It is believed that he was forgiven. Known for being crucified upside down (ironically, the Cross of St. Peter became a symbol of rejection of the Catholic Church – it is used by Satanists, as well as some Gnostics).
