Which organelles of the cell contain hereditary information?

Hereditary information is contained within the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell. DNA together with proteins make up the structure of chromosomes. Such storage of genetic information is more reliable, since there is less chance of damage to DNA strands by various chemicals that can enter the cell. Inside prokaryotic cells, DNA is not surrounded by a nuclear envelope. Genetic information is free in the cytoplasm of the cell. This is a less reliable way of storing DNA, but simpler.
