Which state were the North American colonies subordinate to?

The state that owned most of the North American colonies was the British Empire. Britain came into possession of the Thirteen Colonies between the 17th and 18th centuries. They were founded by religious refugees – Puritans, who were looking for land for a free settlement outside England. At the end of the 18th century, these colonies came into conflict with their mother country and forced London to recognize their independence in the peace negotiations in Paris in 1783. Since then, the United States of America has emerged. The British Empire remained in possession of the colonies in Canada.
