Which thigh muscles are involved in flexion and extension of the knee?

The thigh is composed of a large number of muscles. The posterior muscle group and the quadriceps (consists of the vastus intermediate, the rectus femus, the medial vastus and the lateral vastus) extend the leg at the knee joint. The biceps femoris muscle, semimembranosus muscle and semitendinosus muscle, which are part of the posterior muscle group, take part in flexion of the leg at the knee joint.
