Pope Urban II called for the first crusade of people in 1096. The goals of the Crusades were proclaimed to help the Byzantine Empire in the struggle against the Turks and the liberation of the Holy Sepulcher. It was also done to find a place for the younger sons of feudal lords and peasants: it was assumed that they would colonize the Holy Land.
