The Varangians are northern peoples living on the territory of the Scandinavian Peninsula. It is known that in 862 Novgorodians called them to their lands. Since then, the Varangian king Rurik began to rule in Novgorod. Together with this, he became the ancestor of the first princely dynasty of Rurikovich, which was able to establish itself in Russia for several hundred years.
