The first use of scale and sides of the horizon is attributed to the ancient Greek astronomer and geographer Claudius Ptolemy. His work “Guide to Geography” in eight books is a collection of knowledge about the geography of the whole world, known to ancient peoples. This treatise lays the foundations of mathematical geography and cartography. The maps were compiled according to the stories of travelers and were inaccurate, but showed the connection between regions of the Earth.
