The First World War began in 1914. The reason for this war was numerous conflicts between countries competing in building up colonies. European countries put forward their own ideas for dividing the world into colonies. Those who did not manage to subjugate the territory wanted to do it in the near future. The Russian Empire was interested in the Balkan countries. The European powers sought to gain territory from the crumbling Ottoman Empire. Germany wanted to deprive England of colonial possessions.
