Who was the first sultan in the Ottoman Empire?

In 1281 the leader of the Turkish tribe Kayi Ertugrul died. His son Osman inherited a small territory in Azi Minor. Osman continued his father’s military policy and gradually conquered the Byzantine lands. After the overthrow of the Seljuk emir and his heirs, the entire territory of Lycaonia passed into the possession of Osman, who took the title of sultan. Throughout his reign, Osman the First waged bloody wars, but not infrequently other peoples sought protection from the Turkish sultan.
