Who were called taipins and why? What role did the taipings play in Chinese history?

The Taipings were detachments of rebellious peasants. They fought against the Qing Manchu Empire that ruled in the middle of the 19th century. Also, the goal of the Taiping was to get rid of foreign influence. During this time, European countries began to infiltrate China, seeking to enslave the country and control its resources. Taiping mainly performed in the southern parts of the country – where the population was not accustomed to living historically in the neighborhood of the Manchus. The term itself meant “Great Calm”, intersecting with the slogans of the Chinese dynasties of the Middle Ages, indicating what the peasants would like to strive for.
