Why are all meridians of the same length, but not parallels?

As you know, the Earth has the shape of a ball.
Meridians connect the opposite poles of the globe, so all meridians are the same length (approximately 20,005 km).
Parallels run parallel to the equator (the longest parallel) and the closer the parallels are to the poles, the shorter they are.
The best visual confirmation of this can be obtained by examining the degree grid of the Earth.
