Why are cyanobacteria prokaryotes?

Cyanobacteria are photoautotrophic gram-negative bacteria. The structure of their cell walls, the absence of a nucleus, and many other molecular parameters indicate that they are prokaryotes. They were taken for algae due to their large cell size and ability to photosynthesize, that is, phenotypically, without detailed cytoanalysis.
