Why are elections held?

The purpose of elections is to elect the president or members of parliament. Elections must be public and fair. Elections give legitimacy to the president or parliament. Elections are one of the important properties of democracy. Before the elections, a stage of pre-election campaigning takes place, when candidates tell the people about their plans and discuss among themselves.
