Why are modern nautical charts in the Mercator projection?

The Mercator projection is very convenient for the needs of navigation. This is explained by the fact that the trajectory of the ship moving under the same rumbus to the meridian (i.e. with the constant position of the compass needle relative to the scale) is depicted as a straight line on the map in the Mercator projection.
