Why are onion skin cells transparent?

Elongated cells filled with cytoplasm can be seen under a microscope. The cytoplasm contains vacuoles filled with cell sap, and a nucleus with a nucleolus. The transparent membrane contains microscopic pores. There are no chloroplasts in onion skin cells.
