Why are so many animals living underground in the steppe?

In the steppe, all plants grow low and close to the ground, so there are few large land animals there – there is nowhere to hide. In addition, most of the food is underground – plant roots, bugs, worms, small rodents. In the steppes, there are many herbaceous plants that rodents feed on, and in the ground it is convenient for them to make burrows for supplies and to hide from predators.
