Why are the trunks of pines curving in the forest?

Pines will grow at an angle if they are too close to other trees. New growth tilts towards light, and gradually the whole plant tilts. Straight rows of black holes are caused by a woodpecker. It is very common on pine trees and it will disrupt the flow of water up the tree and often the tops are thrown off. Heavy snow can also bend the tree, and it can never fully straighten up. Besides heavy snow, planting too close to other trees and excessively strong winds are factors that cause trees to bend.
