Why are viruses not considered kingdoms?

Viruses do not belong to any of the five traditional kingdoms, but some biologists say they belong to their own kingdom. Viruses lack cells, one criterion used to place objects in traditional kingdoms.

In addition to the lack of cells, which are the basic units of life, viruses do not perform other functions that would allow them to be placed in traditional kingdoms. The main function of the virus is replication, which it performs through the genetic material DNA or RNA, depending on the virus.
