Why can’t alkaline solutions be stored in aluminum containers?

Al is an amphoter and reacts with alkali solutions, forming soluble complex hexohydroxoaluminates of alkali metals:

2Al + 6KOH + 6H2O = 2K3 [Al (OH) 6] + 3H2 ↑;

2Al + 6NaOH + 6H2O = 2Na3 [Al (OH) 6] + 3H2 ↑.

Thus, storage of alkalis in aluminum containers can contaminate solutions with the products of interaction and gradually dissolve the dishes themselves.
