Why can’t mitochondria live outside the cell?

The smallest living system unit that is able to live independently is a cell. Its smaller components cannot survive on their own, including mitochondria. All organelles in the structure of the cell are closely interconnected. The cytoplasm plays the role of a connecting substance that allows cells to interact with each other. When the cell membrane is damaged and the internal filling flows out into the environment, the system ceases to exist, since the organelles die and can no longer perform their functions.
