Why did a person who had been in slavery not have the right to be a citizen?

Because slaves were the most humiliated stratum of the population in antiquity. In essence, the slave was the property of its owner. The very life of a slave was very difficult, and therefore, rarely one of the slaves lived to old age, most often they died from hunger or from hard physical labor.
