Why did Constantine become emperor?

On October 28, 312, a battle was to take place with Maxentius, who was able to seize power in Rome and rule despotically there. Maxentius prepared for the battle, ordered to build another fraudulent bridge next to the Mulviev bridge. And he could be divorced at any necessary moment. He wanted to drive the army of Constantine there, to open a bridge so that they all fell into the water. As a result, he himself laid down his life on this bridge. Constantine ordered to fish out the body of Maxentius and chop off his head. After, he entered the territory of Rome with the head of Maxentius and was approved as the emperor of the Western Roman Empire. In Mediolan, he met with Licinius, and agreed that the system of two controllers would return. Together they created the Edict of Milan. Then Licinius was expelled and secretly killed. And it was these events that caused Constantine to become the sole manager.
