Why did Emperor Constantine decide to freely worship Christians in the empire?

Nevertheless, in the 4th century there were already a lot of Christians. Thus, if the persecution continued further, it could lead to a large uprising and a split of the empire. In order to avoid such consequences, Emperor Constantine decided to make Christianity the state religion.
