Why did paganism strengthen the tribal system?

Belief in pagan gods strengthened the tribal system, because each tribe developed its own special traditions. Usually in such human communities a hierarchy was formed, at the top of which were the leader and the elder. They became wealthy members of the tribe. Belief in polytheism became the reason for the formation of different traditions and cultural values. It was difficult to unite people from different tribes due to the difference in mentality. According to pagan canons, the chief in the tribe was the leader, only he knew how to communicate with spirits.
